Ruth is a professional visual artist from South London who currently lives on the Kent coast. She studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design, Canterbury, obtaining a BA(Hons) in Fine Art.
In 2008 she was awarded Arts Council funding for the project 3RDFLOOR318. (To find out more about Ruth’s projects and exhibitions, click here.)
Ruth finds a thematic preoccupation with documentation and the archive; the blending of factual/figurative recall, combined with conceptual narratives. She courts anachronism and has sought to ‘plasticise’ the ephemeral nature of passing time via the mediums of 8mm film, photography and installation.
Currently she brings the latter theoretical focus into the medium of oils and canvas. Her paintings sometimes incorporate a metaphysical tracery, ‘painting that which cannot be seen’, within a stunning figurative representation of the natural realm.
Photographs cannot do justice to a painting. The colours, the brushmarks, the play of light on the canvas, are only visible to the naked eye. If you would like to see the paintings in a true light, you are very welcome to visit Ruth at her studio. You can also follow Ruth on Instagram and Twitter.
